Childhood Asthma

So many families are struggling with childhood asthma in their offspring. This article discusses this rapidly escalating problem. Asthma is spreading like never before - and is rapidly on the increase. Here’s why this menace is spreading.

Since asthma is a genetic disease, our forefathers could have developed it. But they didn’t, not at the rate it is developing in our day. Schools report higher incidents of asthma attacks among their pupils. Look in school bags anywhere in Europe or the United States and along with the Gameboys and cell phones, you will almost certainly find asthma inhalers.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that something is causing this change. Study groups show there is more than one answer to the question of what has changed. Pollution, in itself hasn’t been found to be the cause, yet asthma has increased at the same rate as pollution, so there is a correlation. Pollution has been found to make symptoms worse.

In the United States, there is an organization called EPA which monitors daily the air quality all over the country. They publish their data on the internet, TV radio and newspapers. Within or alongside the weather section, you will find the Air Quality Index (AQI), giving a reading on a scale of 0 to 500. A reading of over 100 is considered to be unsafe.
